Who Was St. David?
St. David, the Patron Saint of Wales, was born in Pembrokeshire around 500 AD. His mother, St. Non, gave birth to him during a fierce storm—and legend tells of a sacred spring emerging at the site, believed to hold miraculous healing properties.
As a renowned preacher, St. David founded monastic communities and churches across Wales, Brittany, and southwest England, possibly even establishing Glastonbury Abbey.
Many miracles have been attributed to him, including:
- A holy spring appearing at his birthplace.
- The resurrection of a child.
- Restoring sight to the blind.
- While preaching to a large crowd, the ground beneath him rose to form a hill— ensuring all could hear his words—and a white dove descended upon his shoulder as a symbol of divine blessing.
St. David and his monks lived simply and devotedly, working the land by hand and abstaining from meat and alcohol. Legend says he survived on leeks and water—a tradition that endures as the leek remains a national emblem of Wales. His passing on March 1st, 589 AD, marked the beginning of his legacy as a beloved saint.
